🧭 Workflow: Creating a Table of Contents

The #1 rule of Word is: Use Styles! Do not manually format headings.
  1. Apply Heading Styles: Go through your document and apply "Heading 1" style to your main chapter titles, "Heading 2" to sub-headings, and so on.
  2. Insert the Table of Contents: Place your cursor where you want the TOC. Go to the References tab and click Table of Contents. Choose an automatic style.
  3. Update the Table: If you make changes to your headings or the document structure, right-click the TOC and select Update Field. You can choose to update page numbers only or the entire table.

This workflow ensures your TOC is always accurate and saves you from manually tracking page numbers.

🧪 Use Case: Cleaning Pasted Text

You've copied text from a website, and the formatting is a mess (different fonts, sizes, and spacing).

  1. Select the pasted text.
  2. Press Ctrl + Spacebar. This removes all character-level formatting (bold, italic, font size, color) and reverts it to the underlying paragraph style.
  3. If paragraph formatting is still wrong, apply the "Normal" style with Ctrl + Shift + N.
  4. Now the text is clean, and you can apply your own document's Styles correctly.
Alternatively, use the "Paste Special" option (Ctrl+Alt+V) and choose "Unformatted Text" to paste it cleanly from the start.
