Variable Definitions
- SGi: Specific gravity of component i (dimensionless), referenced to water (water = 1.0).
- Vi: Component volume in the selected unit system (L or US gal).
- Vtotal: Total mixture volume, Ξ£Vi.
- SGmix: Mixture specific gravity (dimensionless).
- Οmix: Mixture density (kg/mΒ³).
- Οw: Reference water density (kg/mΒ³) used for conversions.
Formulas / Logic
- Mass of component: mi = SGi Γ Οw Γ Vi
- Mixture density (mass conservation): Οmix = (Ξ£ mi) / (Ξ£ Vi)
- Mixture SG: SGmix = Οmix / Οw = (Ξ£ (Vi Γ SGi)) / (Ξ£ Vi)
- Conversions:
- Metric: Οmix (kg/mΒ³) = SGmix Γ 1000
- Imperial (reporting): density (lb/gal) = SGmix Γ 8.3454
Assumptions / Notes
- Ideal mixing: Volumes are assumed additive (no shrinkage/expansion on mixing).
- Same basis: SG values should be at the same temperature and referenced consistently to water.
- Scope: Suitable for engineering estimates for liquid mixtures. For systems with significant contraction (e.g., alcohol + water), use measured mixture density or an appropriate mixing model.
- Input constraints: SG β₯ 0, Volume β₯ 0; at least one component must have volume > 0.
Standards / References
- General engineering practice based on conservation of mass and specific gravity definitions.
- Where high accuracy is required, use laboratory data or recognized property packages (e.g., API MPMS / ASTM methods applicable to your fluid system).
