Variable Definitions

  • P (kW): Active/Real Power doing useful work.
  • Qc (kVAr): Capacitor Reactive Power required.
  • cos φ1: Initial (Uncorrected) Power Factor.
  • cos φ2: Target Power Factor.

Formulas

  • Capacitor Sizing: Qc = P × [tan(acos(PF1)) - tan(acos(PF2))]
  • Line Current (3φ): I = (P × 1000) / (√3 × V × PF)
  • Apparent Power: S (kVA) = P / PF

Assumptions & Warnings

  • Assumes a standard inductive load (Lagging PF).
  • Does not account for Harmonic Resonance. If Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) is high, Detuned Reactors are required.
  • Calculations assume voltage remains constant.
